Death From Above made sure their final weekend in Canada for their Outrage! Is Now Tourwas one to remember. DFA fans couldn’t be contained to only one show from one of their favourite punk duos, so it had to be spread to two nights at the Phoenix Concert Theatre, on December 1st and 2nd. Along with their newfound friends, The Beaches, DFA was ready to make their mark on Toronto once again.
The Beaches, riding on the highs of their debut release, Late Show, have been a force as the opener for DFA on this tour. This rock outfit from Toronto has broken onto the scene, with the help of their single “Money”, in a big way in 2017. Their success more than earned them a spot as the opener, but it was their live performance that solidified it. There is nothing better to beef up your musical chops like hitting the road, and the practice has definitely paid off for Jordan Miller, Kylie Miller, Eliza Enman McDaniel, and Leandra Earl. And the best thing about them, is that they are just getting started!
Once The Beaches had successfully warmed up the at-capacity crowd, it was time for the dynamic duo, Death From Above, to hit The Phoenix stage. While it has been a long journey to get to where they are today, it was a quick jaunt for these Toronto boys to play in their hometown. Over the course of their 16+ career together, Sebastien Granger and Jesse F. Keeler (JFK) have crafted a sound that is truly their own. While others may see the limitations of the bass and drums combo (and sometimes keyboards), Sebastian and JFK have never had a problem inspiring more than a few headbangers along the way. From You’re A Woman, I’m a Machine, to 2017’s Outrage! Is Now, DFA has always put on a rambunctious live show, and Decemebr 1st and 2nd were no different.
Death From Above, fresh off the release of their third full length album, Outrage! Is Now, kicked off the night with “Nomad”, “Virgins” and “Caught Up”. As soon as the intro dropped on “Turn It Out” though, the crowd was ready to turn it up! From diehards to new fans, there was plenty to cheer about, as the set encompassed the entire 16-year career of DFA. Sebastian, although fixed to the drum kit, was electric, despite it being “passed his bedtime”. JFK also had enough moves to keep the crowd guessing; busting out serious riffs on his translucent-Rickenbacker bass and keyboards, alike. While there are only two of them up there, the sound and performance would warrant at least 4 or 5 people in a band, if it were anyone besides Sebastian and Jesse.
Death From Above continues their tour in Mexico before heading to Europe in 2018. Let’s hope they swing back to Toronto before they wrap up the tour. We don’t need you…we want you!
