2 dead, 1 critically injured after crash in Brampton

WATCH ABOVE: Peel police say one person is dead and two others have life-threatening injuries after a crash in the area of Bramalea Road and Steeles Avenue early Saturday.

Peel Regional Police say two men are dead and one man has life-threatening injuries after a crash in Brampton early Saturday.

Duty Insp. Stephen Duivesteyn told reporters the crash involving a car and a tractor trailer happened around 12:20 a.m. at Bramalea Road and Steeles Avenue.

“What we know so far is the vehicle was travelling eastbound on Steeles Avenue,” Duivesteyn said.

“The tractor was making a left turn to go from Steeles to go southbound Bramalea. With this investigation, we had the aid of some video surveillance in the area, so what we have learned is the vehicle entered the intersection on a red light where it now collided with the tractor-trailer making a left turn.”

Duivesteyn said three occupants from the car had to be extracted.

He said there was “extensive damage” and it took a lot of effort to extract the victims from the car and subsequently render first aid.

Officers initially said one person died at the scene and two others were taken to hospital with critical injuries. In a news release issued later Saturday, police said a second person died in hospital.

The news release said the front passenger of the 2014 Chrysler 300 — a 19-year-old Mississauga man — died at the scene. The driver, a 21-year-old Mississauga man, and the rear passenger, a 20-year-old Mississauga man, were taken to hospital.

The driver has since died.

The 47-year-old truck driver wasn’t injured.

Duivesteyn said dash cam footage has “greatly assisted” the investigation.

He appealed for any witnesses or anyone else with video footage to contact investigators.

Roads were closed in the area but have since reopened.
