Live updates: Coronavirus in Canada

Speaking to reporters outside Rideau Cottage in Ottawa on Monday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said his government is aiming to be a "partner" to any province or terrirory looking to restart the economy in a "safe, effective" way.

The novel coronavirus, which causes the disease COVID-19, has been classified as a pandemic by the World Health Organization after it spread worldwide.

Countries around the world imposed lockdowns and curfews, and asked people to self-isolate or practise social distancing to try to control the spread of the virus.

Now, months after those moves, several countries are cautiously reopening — including Canada.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Friday that the federal government is offering $14 billion to the provinces and territories to help them re-open from COVID-19.

The financial aid includes funding for personal protective equipment, municipalities, paid sick leave and childcare.
