5 songs you must hear this week: 01 July 2019

Since I started writing this feature in 2016, there has never been a week where all five songs have come from Canadians. Fitting for Canada Day week, no?

1. Allan Rayman, Stitch
Christian (Universal)
Recommended If You Like: Shopping in NYC. (Watch the video and you’ll understand)

Rayman has teamed up with Alex Da Kid (Rihanna, Emimen) for this new record. The first video follows Canadian fashion designer Daniel Gregory Natale as he gets ready for Paris Fashion Week. Watch for dates on his tour, The Allan Rayman Show, coming up later this year.

2. Dave Monks, Bluebird
Single (Dine Alone)
RIYL: The softer side of Tokyo Police Club

Every once in a while, Dave makes time to work outside Tokyo Police Club to exorcise some sort of creative jones. This single, the first since his 2015 EP All Signs Points to Yes, is “disguised” as “ambient” and inspired by Radiohead’s Kid A.

3. Current Swell, High Life
Single (Nettwerk)
RIYL: This sounds like The Killers to me for some reason.

Victoria’s Current Swell is set for a quick Canadian summer tour followed by something more expansive through November and December. Watch for a gig at Lee’s Palace on November 29. A new album should be out by then, too.

4. Paper Lions, Rhythm and Gold
Single (Fountain Pop Records)
RIYL: Phoenix, Two Door Cinema Club, Vampire Weekend

As one of the few bands to break out of Prince Edward Island (C’mon. Name another one.) Paper Lions have done well, amassing millions of streams for past songs as well as landing in songs for a couple of shows on ABC and NBC/ A new album is due this fall.

Dizzy, Twist
Single (Royal Mountain)
RIYL: Lorde, Tove Lo, Billie Eilish

Lest we forget, Dizzy took home the Juno earlier this year for Alternative Album of the Year for their debut record, Baby Teeth. This single, the first indication of a new EP due later this year, was written in part in a shower in a hotel room in Amarillo, Texas.
