Elon Musk has enraged the ‘flat earth’ community

Elon Musk made history this week when SpaceX launched a red Tesla playing David Bowie’s Space Oddity on a constant loop into space attached to the rocket Falcon Heavy. Although the rest of the world sees this as an important advancement in space technology, the launch has been a real thorn in the side of the flat earth community. Twitter even created a moment about it. If you’re uninitiated in the world of flat-earthers, it’s exactly what the name describes. They believe that the earth is flat despite the plethora of evidence that proves otherwise.

Coming to their defence the Flat Earth Society dismissed the SpaceX launch as nothing more than a publicity stunt to distract from Tesla’s biggest quarterly loss. Others in the community have linked the launch to the Illuminati, and even suggest that it was staged on the same set as the moon landing. Oh yeah, they think the moon landing was fake too.

Many flat earth YouTubers have already come out with clickbait videos “debunking” the SpaceX launch. In a perplexing video titled “SPACE X EXPOSED! FLAT EARTH MOVEMENT GROWING STRONGER! *MUST SEE*” the conspiracy theorist spends over 30 minutes linking the launch to everything from Satan to the Illuminati, and even goes as far as to say that the fact that the SpaceX video is shot using a fisheye lens proves that it’s fake. That video already has well over 20,000 views.

But it’s not just the YouTube flat earth community getting salty about the launch. Flat Earth Society forums are riddled with people debating the topic. In one particular thread a user named Hoppy wrote “Cursing Elon, gimme a break. We are laughing at you and the Elon fanboys. I think (it) is funny that you boys believe that his Tesla is flying in space.” But no matter what side people are on something they all seem to agree on is that David Bowie’s Space Oddity is a really great song.
